Stropping kits

Stropping is a form of polishing.  It is a process that does not remove any material from the blade.  There is a variety of stropping devices.  The most famous is the traditional leather strap used in men’s barbers shops to put the final edge on straight razors.  Stropping paddles are available from many sources. Improvised strops include a strip of canvas or a piece of thick cloth, heavy duty paper or cardboard, or a piece of softwood.

The stropping action is defined as using a trailing edge action where the cutting edge follows the back of the blade.  So if the cutting edge is facing you, the stropping actions is to draw the knife away from you; if the cutting edge is facing away from you, the stopping action is to pull the knife towards you.

Frequently, a polishing compound is used in conjunction with a strop.  These include chromium oxide, Jewelers’ rouge, a diamond paste or a spray containing diamond particles.
